Merge and Augment Courses

If you teach multiple sections of a course, or have both graduate and undergraduate students in the same course, if may be easier to merge or augment your course. To request a course merge or augment, contact us.

Course Merge

Instructors who teach multiple sections of the same course may prefer to manage those sections through a single, combined course. University of Miami course instructors can therefore request a "merged" course by combining individual Blackboard course sections, which will also include student enrollments from all course sections. With the merged site, course instructors can post course material and send announcements once, rather than posting it in each section’s site separately. If you prefer to update one course across multiple sections, it may be easier to combine courses into one Blackboard course site, rather than have a separate site for each section.

Example: Merging two course sections

Before the merge, they would both appear in your course listing in Blackboard.

  • FYD101-E5 - First Year Directions (Fall 2021)
  • FYD101-E9 - First Year Directions (Fall 2021)

After the merge process, you and your students will only see one course, and enrollments from E5 and E9 will appear in your course.

  • FYD101-MERGED - First Year Directions (Fall 2021)

Note: Courses should be merged before any student activity takes place in the course sites for the various sections. User records, such as discussion board posts, grades, and assessment attempts, will not show up in the new, merged, site.

Course Augment

Instructors can also request a course “augment” rather than a course merge. An augment maintains all of your original course sites and adds one additional master site with all of the students from your various sections. With the course augment option you can use the master site to post course material in one location, and reserve the individual section course sites for assignments or tests specific to each course section.

Example: Augment two course sections

Before the augment process, they would both appear in your course listing in Blackboard.

  • FYD101-E5 - First Year Directions (Fall 2021)
  • FYD101-E9 - First Year Directions (Fall 2021)

After the augment process, you will three courses, and enrollments from E5 and E9 will appear in your additional augmented course. Your students will see two courses, the AUGMENT course, and their original course section.

  • FYD101-AUGMENT - First Year Directions (Fall 2021) - Both E5 and E9 enrollments.
  • FYD101-E5 - First Year Directions (Fall 2021) - E5 enrollments only.
  • FYD101-E9 - First Year Directions (Fall 2021) - E9 enrollments only.
