Blackboard Course Roles

Course roles control access to the content and tools within a course. Each user is assigned a role for each course they participate in. The following list includes the default course roles:

Instructor Instructors have full access to the course Control Panel. This role is generally assigned to the person developing, teaching, or facilitating the class. If a course is unavailable to students, users with the Instructor role may still access it.
Teaching Assistant (TA) Users with the Teaching Assistant role (co-teachers) have access to the full course Control Panel. If the course is unavailable to students, teaching assistants may still access the course.
Course Builder The Course Builder role has access to most areas of the course or organization Control Panel. This role is appropriate for an assistant who should not have access to student grades. If the course is unavailable to students, a course builder can still access the course. The course builder cannot remove an instructor from a course. Course Builders have access to the following Control Panel sections: Course Files Content Collection Course Tools Users and Groups Customization Packages and Utilities
Grader A grader assists the Instructor in the creation, management, delivery, and grading of items like tests, assignments, discussion board posts, etc. A grader also assists the instructor with managing the Grade Center. Graders have access to the following Control Panel sections: Course Files Content Collection Course Tools Evaluation Grade Center Packages and Utilities (limited access)
Student Student is the default course role. Students have no access to the Control Panel. Student Like Access This recommended for course guests. This role carries the same functions as “Student” but the user will not appear in the grade center.

Locating Users in Blackboard

Blackboard Original Course View is a multi-step process we have helped outline below.

  • Click on “Users and Groups” and Select “Users." “Users and Groups” is located in the Control Panel of your Course Menu.
  • Click on “Find Users to Enroll“. “Find Users to Enroll” will take you to another page where you can add users to your course site.
  • Enter the User’s C# in the Username Box. The Username box will only accept the C# of the user you are trying to enroll in your course site.
  • If you do not know the User’s C# you can click on “Browse“. Click on Browse to open a new window where you can perform a search for the user that you would like to enroll in your course.
  • You will be able to search for the user by Username, First Name, Last Name, or email. You can perform a search for a user by:
    • Username = C# (This can be helpful if you have a C# and you would like to ensure that it belongs to the person you are trying to add).
    • First Name = You can look for the user by First Name (This can return a lot of results).
    • Last Name = You can look for the user by Last Name (This can return a lot of results).
    • Email = You can look for the user by their email address.
  • Select the Role that you would like the user to have in your course. There are multiple roles that you can select your user to have. However, enrolling a user as a “Guest” can cause them to not have access to your course site. If you are unsure of which role to enroll a user in your course site, view the descriptions below.
  • Click “Submit” to finish enrolling the user in your course site.

Request Assistance
